Letters of William Lewis and his wife Lucy, missionaries of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, from Leech and Red lakes in northern Minnesota and from La Pointe, Wisconsin. The letters, largely to friends and family in Ohio, describe their journeys across Lake Superior to La Pointe, and later to Leech Lake and Red Lake; farming experiences at their reservation posts; their missionary and teaching work among the Ojibwe; their children Harriet and Daniel; Ojibwe customs, attitudes toward life and work, lifestyles, and religious beliefs and practices; the Lewis's own attitudes towards the Ojibwe; frontier life and its hardships. The 1926 letter from their daughter Harriet Kinney provides some family information.

Elizabeth Taylor Ayer was born in Massachusetts in 1803. FRederick Ayer was born in Stockbridge, Massachusetts that same year. Elizabeth went to Mackinac, Michigan in 1828 as a missionary teacher among Ojibwe Indians.
